𖤓 Happy June!!  By now we probably know what has taken, what has not and what will need more work.  The great thing about plants, gardening and landscaping is there are never failures just experiments.

May was incredibly busy and I don’t see it settling any this month.  We’re shifting from prepping and planting to growing and maintaining.

In May we saw a lot of cooler nights, rain, hail, wind, and more wind. We are hoping to see less of the wild fluctuations and more steady weather- hopefully not blazing hot.

In Case You Missed It

Roots Nursery is now open on Sundays!

Monday-Saturday 8AM-5PM

Sunday 9AM-5PM

The fruit stand is back! We are excited to be leasing the space to another business this year. Fruit Stand Open 9AM-5PM

🐝Bee Update: Our hives are looking good and bees are starting to produce nectar.

Summer Water & Nutrient Management

The hotter it gets (and we all know it will get hot!) the more we will need and want to water.

Instead of just increasing minutes try and increase the frequency.  Our clay soils can only take in so much water.  The rest needlessly runs off and away. Fertilizing properly and regularly will help water take up thereby having to water less. When changing water it is best to increase/decrease in small increments. Big swings in quantities may shock the plants.

Leaves are often telling with water issues.  Yellow and rubbery = too much water.  Dry and crispy can often mean too little.

B-1 is a great product in combination with your existing fertilization program to help with shock and root strength of plants.

If your reblooming plants (roses, lilacs, lillies, etc.) have finished their first bloom, it is time to clean those up and cut back a bit so they can set their next set of blooms. Fertilizing those with a bloom booster or blossom booster will help encourage vigorous flower production and a healthier plant.  One of my favorites is Jack’s Blossom Booster.  A great proven product.

Annuals need to be fertilized regularly for continued growth and blooming. Blossom Booster on a petunia feed is great for this.

Jack’s Classics are water soluble plant food with micronutrients that allow for continued plant health over time. Professional grade fertilizers for home gardeners.

Summer Pest & Weed Management

Beware as the heat comes so do more pests. We have seen a drastic increase in thrip and aphid, and seen some scale and other pests. We are taking both natural and chemical steps to stay ahead.

I suspect that this year will be very tough for pests in and around the valley as the winter wasn’t cold enough to kill anything off.  This includes weeds.  We have seen a dramatic presence of broad leaf and weedy grasses at the farm and the nursery.

A combination of Hi-Yield Weed and Grass preventer, Casoron, and Hi-Yield Killzall has been our go-to this year.  If you are on irrigation water, we are seeing a continued presence of all sorts of weeds that we are managing with Weed-Out Plus Lawn Fertilizer.

Roots has joined the Yakima Klickitat Farm Association

The Yakima Klickitat Farm Association represents our members and the local farming community in Yakima and Klickitat Counties. Our long-term purpose is to protect and support your right to farm and ranch. Today, farms and ranches are under an unprecedented threat in Washington State from legislative and regulatory overreach. We identify these challenges and work to mitigate them.

We also encourage the next generation of farmers by sponsoring local FFA and 4-H fairs and by offering scholarships.

Save Family Farming

We’d like people to be aware of the Save Family Farming group. Visit their website to learn about the education, outreach, and advocacy work they do.

Save Family Farming is the unified voice of Washington’s family farmers. Our unique role is to reach out to the non-farming public to build a better understanding of what our family farmers are doing to grow great food in a way that consumers today now expect. Our farmers, with very few exceptions, are environmental stewards and leaders, are excellent employers who care for and protect the interests of their employees and treat animals with respect and dignity. As more voices in our polarized world speak out against “industrial agriculture” and “factory farming,” we work to set the record straight.
